Weight Worries Wednesday: The Exante Diet – A Review

I am a big fan of meal replacement shakes diets. Not that I particularly love the taste of diet shakes, I prefer real food like everyone but I’ve found that diet shakes are the best option for me. There is no cooking/thinking involved which pleases the useless cook in me. Boredom issues aside, it’s just an easy diet to follow. While I was googling for Cambridge Diet supplies, I stumbled on the Exante Diet and thought I could try them for a change. So I succumbed to the bumper package offer at half price and bought a box of 50 vanilla shakes for £59.50.

I have already tried every diet shake under the sun (Slim Fast, Celebrity Slim, Tony Ferguson, Cambridge Diet) and apart from Slim Fast, I usually have to pay around £1.99 per shake, so I really wanted to try this diet, at just £1.20 per meal.

They say: Our diet shakes are thick & creamy. They have NO aspartame, NO artificial colours, NO MSG and have NO genetically modified products! 3 packs a day gives you 100% RDA's!

My order reached me in the speed of light. I was able to start straight away and then it hit me, from the very first shake. I knew I was not to expect a product as tasty as Tony Ferguson shakes (The shakes by Tony Ferguson are, hands down, the tastiest shakes I have ever had) but nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience. I should have smelt a rat by looking at the nutritional value details, but the offer was so good, that I chose to ignore my first instincts.

How can I put this diplomatically? I’ve never drunk a shake as greasy and heavy as this one. It reminded me of a liquid version of a typical British fish and chips. I could cope with the not-even-remotely-tasting-like-vanilla flavour but it’s the whole texture that I really had problems with. It felt as if I had swallowed a liquid lump of butter. I felt so uncomfortable after it. Not only I felt full, but I felt too heavy for comfort. Looking at the shake in my shaker was not a pretty sight as I could see the little bubbles of grease left behind sticking on the empty shake bowl.

Nutritionally wise, this shake kept me going from 12 noon till 9pm without feeling hungry w h a t s o e v e r. On that respect, the shake is really good value for money and I can feel that if I stuck with it, I could achieve ketosis (more on that in another post) very easily but I just cannot bring myself with drinking another one. A bit of shame to find that out after buying a box of 50, isn’t it?

If you’re a seasoned Fish and Chips eater, or like your toast heavily buttered, you will probably be all right and will be amazed on how long this shake can make you feel full for, but I just couldn’t get along with it. Why didn’t I follow my instincts and draw some conclusions that a shake 3 times more the amount of fat than in an average shake  (see comparison table below) was going to be very different to what I am used to, I don’t know but I could kick myself for it! Argh.

Happy dieting :) x

Oh man, I wouldn't even TOUCH something that had that much sugar or sat fats in!! No matter how much protein had (apart from the naughty fish and chips small portion on the Fridays ;) ) I mean, yeah, you get good fats, but look at the sugar!! That sugar content makes me want to scream and run for the hills haha! And I love sugar! I've never really tried milk shake diets, but I did drink Slim fast milk shakes when I was younger, on top of eating LOL They tasted good!

Awwww darlz :( What a terrible waste of money :( you should try ebay-ing the ones you've got left, maybe you could make at least some of it back. Good luck and at least you have been able to try it and post about it to help stop other people making the same mistake xx

Oh no! That doesn't sound very pleasant at all!

I'm about to embark on the Slimfast one in an attempt to kick start a diet. I think the coffee flavour isn't too bad and it's easy peasy (especially if you're a lazy little non-chef like me!)

My problem is that I like snacking too much! :(

In its defense....I've lost 4 stone on it, and quite quickly. I had a bar in the morning and then a shake and a soup later, and a lot of water. I can only manage 2 weeks at a time, 2 weeks on then I have a 2 week break then 2 weeks back on. I've 2 stone more to lose. It does say you can stay a month on the total solution but I tried that once and 1) weight loss slowed right down and 2) it was way too much of a struggle...plus I just dont think you should do it for 4 weeks. The Dukan diet works for me too, I just find though that when I spend so much on a diet I do stick 100% to it, on the Dukan my will power goes.

They are lovely tasting compared to a lot of the other brands, the ingredient quality is really high and it WORKS! :) there bars are amazing, really dense and full if fibre.

The sugar used is glucose, so you don't get the really bad side effects linked to sucrose or fructose.

I've lost 7 pound in 4 days, is hour a low carb plateau and nothing was working anymore.

Happy dieting!

i feel your pain liloo, i spent £100 on one of their bumper packs and that greasy taste is, to put it nicely, absolutely vile! i still have the box of them sitting there one year on.. cant bring myself to bin that much money, how stupid :( wish the cambridge was without consultant meetings and slightly less expensive cos i really enjoyed theirs :)

Doh! How come I find your page AFTER I have just placed an order! Luckily I have only signed up for one weeks supply as I am really just trying to find a cheaper alternative to LIGHTER LIFE. Love LL shakes but I just do not get along with the 'meeting/class/therapy' session that you have to pay an additional £15 for. I don't want to sound uncaring but I get nothing from listening to other peoples fat stories ... I have plenty of my own. I will give these a chance - adding a teaspoon of coffee to the vanilla shakes as I already do with LL. Good luck to all trying to escape the curse of obesity x

I cant say im too keen either, I made up the apple and cinnamon porridge for breakfast and I could not eat it at all it was so sweet and stayed really runny with the odd few lumps despite me using a blender! I then wrnt on to try the chocolate and orange bar, it certainly filled me up but it has a strange powder base taste, although it get go after a few bites. I wont be buying anymore

What! this is probably the reason your on your diet, if it doesnt take like the real thing i wont have it attitude. Your on a diet. the fact it doesnt taste like gravel is reason enough to have it. but personally i think it tastes great. maybe your on an old version? The one i have is mushroom risotto, pasta carbonara, and soups and shakes. vanilla isnt the best but i hate vanilla anyway so resorting to those for the last few days of the diet.
Ive been on it for 2 weeks and lost 1.5 stone. it works. If you have will power and not a nose and stomach that takes you into every snack or cake shop you pass then the Exante Diet is well worth doing. PS Groupon did a deal and i got the 2 week supply for £34.99 including postage. BARGAIN.

It's really tough eating the 3 packets of "food" per day. The products are filling but taste pretty awful. The best thing I have had in 2 weeks is the toffee milkshake, then the Thai soup. The spaghetti bolognaise is horrendous and the carbonara is horrible. I have lost 1 stone in 10 days but have to drink 4 litres of water a day to keep filled up. 28 days on this diet is more than enough.
