Nair Upper Lip Kit

Since an unfortunate episode at the beauty salon, I've been avoiding beauty salons like the plague and I've been taking charge of the unwanted hair on my face at home. I've been scared to get my eyebrows waxed at the beautician (any beautician, not just the one who butchered my brows) so I have been trying to maintain my brows myself with a pair of tweezers. As I get older, removing unwanted hair around my eyebrows is getting easier and easier. My eyebrows just don't grow as full as they used to anymore and I find myself spending more time filling them in rather than tidying them off.

Hair on the upper lip, however, is still a problem. You'd think as you get older, hair on this area will stop growing too but no. Lately I have been trying to control the appearance of facial hair on the upper lip whilst bleaching it. The problem with bleaching is that the hair is still there, less noticeable but it's still there. As I was photographing some stuff for the blog, in my kitchen, on a sunny day, one day, I caught sight of my upper lip foliage and was horrified. The same day, I found myself in the aisles of Boots, purchasing my very first hair removal cream kit.

The choice of hair removal creams was quite baffling for the newbie like me. I remember that there was a product for the face, from Boots own brand at £2ish but I opted for a pricier product and went home with the Nair Upper Lip Kit (RRP: £5.10) formulated for sensitive skin.

001-nair-upper-lip-kit-review

The rationale behind my purchase was two fold:

1) A pricier product would mean better quality. If I want to have a memorable first time, I want to give myself as many chances as possible of liking the product. So I might just as well go for a good product, instead of choosing a cheapie one and running the risk of being put off for life from a method of hair removal I never tried before. I also remember the days when I was trying to learn how to put false lashes on and it was only when I spent £5 in a reputable brand like Eylure that I managed to put for the first time a pair of eyelashes with confidence.

2) A product for sensitive skin would be better suited for hair removal newbies.

Do you know where this is going yet? I am trying to write this in the most neutral way as possible, trying to manage the suspense, only to reveal my opinion of the product at the end of this post but I feel like you can already sense where this is going.

I made the effort to read all the instructions but chose to ignore the bit where it says you have to patch test a small area to see if you develop a strong reaction with it. The packet suggests that you do the patch test EVERYTIME you use it. Really? Who does that?

005-nair-upper-lip-kit-review

004-nair-upper-lip-kit-review

My first impressions were really good. The kit contains 2 tubes: the blue one is for removing the actual hair and the pink one is the moisturiser, to use after you've done removing the hair, to soothe and moisturise the upper lip. The colour coding makes sense in a way. The blue (blue for boys) is tough, like men are tough and strong and removes the hair. The pink (pink for girls) is girlie and adds some needed ‘gentleness’ to the world  Winking smile

002-nair-upper-lip-kit-review

What also impressed me that is that I didn't notice any scent at all, in either the blue or the pink product. It's only after I was done with the product that I realised that it didn't have any scent.

I wanted to leave the product for the 5 recommended minutes but as I tried to sweep some of the hair off, I noticed that it didn't come off easily so I decided to leave it on for 5 more minutes, making sure not to exceed 10 minutes overall. I was definitely ready to take the product after 10 minutes as I could feel the tingling sensation getting more and more noticeable.

As I expected it, my lip felt very tender when I removed the product. I was expecting this feeling to last maybe 4 hours, as this is usually the amount of time  that my lip feels tender after an upper lip wax. The problem is that my lip felt sore for a whole 48 hours. It wasn't red, it wasn't a burning sensation as such but it just felt weird to the touch, so incredibly tender but numb at the same time, like the pain you get after a lip wax, but a pain which would last 48 hours. As the hours went by, my lip felt better and better but the first 24 hours were just extremely uncomfortable. Then 2 days later, when the pain had finally subsided, the hair started to grow back. Hair Regrowth felt quite sharp, a bit reminiscent of leg hair regrowth but at a smaller scale.

It's extremely unlikely that I am going to re-use the Nair upper lip kit ever again. I can't say it's a bad product and Nair did very well to create a scent free product but I think it's this particular method of hair removal which is not suitable for me. It's an experience that I never want to go through again. It's not worth it, 48 hours of uncomfortable pain and when the pain finally subsides, you have to contend with regrowth. To be honest, I don't know how long my upper lip stays hair free when I have it waxed but it certainly lasts longer than 2 days! To be fair, the product *did* mention that it would remove all visible hair, not hair from the root as waxing would but I expected better than that. And if I'm going to have 'sharper' lip hair again after 2 days, I might just as well use a razor and be done with it.

003-nair-upper-lip-kit-review

If you're quite accustomed to hair removal products and quite like this method, you will probably enjoy this kit. No need to mix anything, it has a handy slanted applicator nozzle thing, and it has no noticeable smell, from what I can remember anyway. If you're new to the method altogether, I would recommend to experiment with a cheaper product and see how you get on with that, with a view to upgrade in the future. The Nair upper lip kit retails for £5.10. To add salt to injury, it's on half price at the moment: £2.55 at Boots. Grr!

Intensely Kissed

If you had told me 1 year ago that I would be buying vibrant lipglosses, I would have laughed at you. Apart from rare special occasions, I don't really do bright lips, you see. In fact, I don't really do lips products full stop. But somehow, out of the blue, and since February 2012, I have become a massive fan a MUA Cosmetics lip products. It started with the love hearts lip balms (I never used to carry a lip balm before) but the love for MUA cosmetics reached full bloom when I realised that I wanted to reach my mua lip boom (shade doin good) most days for work. So when MUA Cosmetics released a line of high intensity lip glosses, it was a no brainer and I just had to go and try some.

01-mua-intense-kisses-high--intensity-gloss-review-lips-are-sealed-swatch-kiss-and-tell

Like the name suggests, the 'Intense Kisses' high intensity lip glosses are very pigmented lip glosses. Like their little love hearts and lip boom sisters, they have the same vanilla scent which I am extremely fond of. But most of all, they fulfill my number criteria which I have now started to expect from all my lip products from MUA: not being sticky.

02-mua-intense-kisses-high--intensity-gloss-review-lips-are-sealed-swatch-kiss-and-tell

'Lips are sealed' and 'Kiss and Tell' are two lovely and bright shades, maybe too bright for me. I must admit that I have yet to pucker up the courage to wear them for work. My work people have never seen me with a bright lip, you see and I am a little bit shy. Outside work, at the week end, I have been enjoying wearing 'lips are sealed'. The world has yet to see me wearing 'Kiss and Tell' but it's only a matter of time now.

Not being a lip person to start with, I still can't believe how it happened but I need to face the facts: I have, most definitely caught the bug for MUA Cosmetics lip products but at £2 a pop, I actually don't feel bad about it. Open-mouthed smile

Boom boom boom boom, I want you in my room…

There are so many lipsticks and lip products around, how do you make a difference these days? You design 'Lip Boom' a versatile lip product which can give you 4 looks in once. The idea for the MUA Cosmetics Lip Boom comes from Alexandra Burke, winner of the popular singing talent show X Factor. The lip booms are not just another product where a cosmetic company has approached a celebrity to endorse. Alexandra Burke has been involved in every step of the creation process, the shades, the formulation, to the names of the shades which are taken from Alexandra's favourite expressions. British Beauty Blogger, who went to the rather fabulous launch a few months ago has got the details for you.

001-mua-cosmetics-lip-boom-review-swatch-doin-good-cheeky-ok

aburke_gl_20aug12_rexfeatures_b_1

I am a massive fan of the MUA Love Hearts lip balms so I was really excited to find out that the lip booms had the same (if a little more pronounced, and with a touch of toffee) vanilla smell than the mua lip balms tins. One side of the lip boom contains a matte lipstick, the other contains a loud and vivid glitter gel base to add some drama and dimension to the lips.

002-mua-cosmetics-lip-boom-review-swatch-doin-good-cheeky-ok

On the photos, it looks like the chunky glitter is going to be like big metallic clumps of glitter, like nail glitter which are going to hurt your lips. They are surprisingly soft, I don't feel any grittiness AT.ALL. As for sticky factor, again they feel very similar to the love hearts lip balms, very creamy and not too sticky at all. I can't get my head round how MUA has managed to do a product so glittery but yet not gritty at all.

005-mua-cosmetics-lip-boom-review-swatch-doin-good-cheeky-ok

I hope you don't mind if I only lip swatch my favourite shade 'doin good' as I don't think the more paler shades will suit my skin tone.

006-mua-cosmetics-lip-boom-review-swatch-doin-good-cheeky-ok

The packaging explains that one of the ways to apply the lip boom is to wear the matte lipstick on all the lips and the highlighter just in the centre. (This is how I tried to do it on my swatch)  I don't think it's possible, you know. Once you have this drama going on in the centre, it naturally distributes on the rest of the lips but then again, this is what I expected with a product called Lip Boom: drama on your lips so that they do all the talking.

The lip boom might not be the smallest lipstick to take on a night out but it's 10x times more fun than my traditional Mac teddy bear lipstick and I don't need to root around my handbag another time to find the lipgloss.

Alexandra Burke: you did good there Smile

The Chubby sticks of the poor: just bitten, just landed …

and just swatched.

For months now, the American have been teasing us with the Revlon 'Just Bitten' Kissable lipbalm stains. The wait is over and those of us living in the UK, can have finally have our grubby mitts on them now.

01-revlon-just-bitten-kissable-lip-balm-stain-uk-swatch

What are the Just Bitten kissable balm stains (again)?
They say: A pampering balm fused with a lightweight lipstain that gives you softer, smoother lips with a flush of shiny color that lasts hour after hour. The smooth and moisturizing gel formula glides on beautifully with a light peppermint fragrance for truly kissable lips – no sharpener is required!

The shades have all been named around the theme of love. My own ‘personal’ Superdrug received 7 shades, but I am not sure how many shades in total the UK will receive. Here are some quick swatches for you:

The cutest lip balms ever?

Lip balms: Now this is something I didn't think I would write about. I don't usually use a lip balm. In fact, it's probably fair to say that I am not a lip person really. I find lip products {or the ones I've tried so far} uncomfortable and sticky. I also sport very long hair and I get paranoid at the thought of the lip product getting on my hair. I was offered the chance to try 2 lip balms from Mua Cosmetics, taken from the Love Hearts Collection, collection which was released just in time for Valentine's Day celebrations.

001-mua-cosmetics-love-hearts-lip-balm-great-lips-sugar-lips

The lip balms exist in 5 shades (although, at this precise moment in time, I can only see 4 on the website). Today, I want to share with you my impressions on 'Sugar Lips' and 'Great Lips'. The packaging is just too cute for words. To give you an idea of the size, the container is about the same circumference as a bottle of Batiste. On opening the lid, I was greeted with a lovely smell of vanilla. I found the formula very light, smooth, moisturising, and most of all not sticky. A little goes a long way. Just a teeny weeny dab is enough to bring moisture to your lips. The cherry on the cake? The lip balms cost £2.

002-mua-cosmetics-love-hearts-lip-balm-great-lips-sugar-lips

The daughter of my colleague at work (she's about 12?) was there when I received my parcel. Her eyes lit up when she saw the giant sweeties. I thought I could give them to her if I didn't get along with them, but I am afraid I am going to have to keep them. This is too good and too cute to 'waste' on teens. I love the light formula, the scent and the packaging too much to give them away.

003-mua-cosmetics-love-hearts-lip-balm-great-lips-sugar-lips

This is totally the kind of lip balm you'd be proud to show off from your handbag, whatever your age, teen or all grown up. The lip balms reminded actually of the film 'Ratatouille', when the all grown up grumpy critique got all soft and gooey when he rediscovered his favourite dish from his childhood. If you've grown up with love hearts, this is a must have for you and for all girlfriends' Christmas stockings. I know, i know, it's only gone past Valentine's day. The thing is I don't even know if this collection is limited edition.

I don't remember the date when they'll be physically released in Superdrug stores, but you can already get your paws on them via the
official website. Postage is low (£2.95).

Pout Painting

I've never been a 'lip' kind of person really When I  play with makeup, I like to focus the drama on the  eyes and tend to go for a very neutral lip colour.  I'm not a fan of textures of lipsticks either: I  usually find them sticky, messy, and not very comfortable to wear all around. When I first heard  of lip pigments, I had been wanting to try them  hoping they might give me the colour I want but  perhaps without the stickiness and usual gripes I  have about lipsticks.

At £10 a small tube, even when you apparently need a tiny little droplet to cover your own  lip, there was no way I was going to indulge in the  OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) lip tars,  probably the most talked about lip pigments to date.  But when Sleek Makeup decided to release their  version of lip tars at half the price, £4.99, I  thought it might be the time to try some.

Image38

They say:
'The best of lipgloss, lipstick and a little bit  extra'
'Be a shade braver and have fun mixing pout paint to  achieve your own unique shade.
Pout pain releases the makeup artist in you and is  available in 11 shades.
'No more irritating tackiness or having to worry  about coverage wearing off, just bags of colours and  long-staying power.
I say:

Umm, there goes my ‘I am only going to spend a fiver in this’ out of the window since the ultimate purpose of the pout paint  is buy a few shades, let your creativity run wild and create your own shades.

There are 11 shades on offer and these were officially released in selected Superdrug Stores today:

poutpaint01

poutpaint02

First Impressions: a huge massive disappointment not  to see a black pout paint in there. What a crying shame. Since  the pout paint is hailed as being long lasting, I  was hoping to wear one of them for Halloween,  perhaps some sort of vampirish lip with black in the  outer corners or just full black, and forget about it and party the night away.

I came home with 3 shades:

Image3  Image5

This is the moment where I confess not having a lip brush. So I used a eyeliner brush to apply my first Pout Paint, which was milkshake. As as result, my application was very uneven. I doubt nobody, apart from Nicky Minaj would want to wear this on its own.

Next, is a shade I had my mind set on trying from the very beginning. This is Rosetta:

and last but not least, the bright and majestuous Pinkini

pinkini

SAM_1656

My thoughts: I’ve got so many things I want to say about them. First things first, there is absolutely no way I would wear MILKSHAKE on its own, not even for fancy dress. I would not even consider bribery. ROSETTE and PINKINI by contrast are absolutely gorgeous and I feel that paired with a neutral eye makeup, they just add such a pop of colour to your complexion.

Application was, as to be expected, very laborious with a small eyeliner brush but I am reasonably happy about how it went, after a disastrous first go with MILKSHAKE. I can’t stress enough how little you need to cover a whole lip: a minuscule dot is all you need. Put too much and you’ll be left with a unpleasant wet feeling, as if you’re going to smear the whole room just by talking.

By the time, I applied ROSETTE and PINKINI, I felt so much more in control and applying less product made a massive difference. Non lipstick lovers will absolutely love this: As I was so desperately hoping, these sleek pout paint definitely deliver a great punch of colour without the stickiness of a lipstick. I am absolutely over the moon about that! This is precisely what I wanted from the Pout Paints.

I was afraid they would bleed and I am happy to report, that I didn’t experience any bleeding at all although I’m pretty sure some bleeding would have occurred after wearing Milshake for a while, as I definitely applied too much.

I wanted to test the bleeding and lasting power of Pinkini. I decided to venture out of my house (it was after 10pm) to Tesco and let me tell you that was a first for me. Apart from Halloween, I had never left the house with such a lurid shade of lipstick on my lips. What gave me confidence was the fact that it felt like I was wearing absolutely nothing: it felt liberating. I can’t promise you I will be wearing this, during the day as it takes some confidence to wear something so bright, when you don’t usually wear much colour on your lips.

A whole Cheese and Pickle sandwich later, this is what was left of Pinkini. It definitely took some battering but I am pretty impressed on how much colour I have been left with.

Image24

I am absolutely over the moon with the Pout Paints. The non-sticky lightweight feel of them is very liberating. What a shame they didn’t have it  in black…

Maybe she's born with it …

… Maybe she’s swatched it in the shop.

SAM_5736

I was excited to see these new lip products today from my Boots store on special introductory offer: Meet the new Maybelline New York Superstay 24hr Lipcolor.

They say:

”Stretches your limits of longwear. No crumbling, no fading, no transferring, no drying, no smudging, Maybelline New York's longest wear. Flex formula keeps Maybelline New York Superstay 24hr Lipcolor gorgeous for up to 24 hours.
Why you'll love Maybelline New York Superstay 24hr Lipcolor:
- Micro-Flex formula glides on and looks gorgeous all day
- No crumbling, no caking, no fading, no feathering, no transferring
- 2-step lip colour in one pack.
For best results:
Apply the liquid color to your clean, bare lips. Allow a full two minutes to dry, then apply ultra-conditioning balm to seal in softness. Reapply balm as needed. Remove with an oil-based makeup remover"

Now this is where it all gets a bit complicated.
The official american website boasts to offer 30 shades in the range, the official british website holds 18 shades,  the boots website holds 18 shades, and my little poxy boots offers 8 shades. Here are my 3 favourite:
