Mascara Monday. The Battle of Mascaras. L'Oréal Volume Million Lashes versus BeautyUK Lash-Fx

Today, I am very excited to introduce you to Jade, blogging at Beauty Butterfly Blog, who has kindly volunteered to review not one but 2 mascaras for me. I love Jade’s blog, I love her honesty and her clear in depth reviews.
Take it away, Jade!

I’m a bit of a mascara junkie if I’m honest, I’ve been searching for the perfect lengthening mascara for absolutely ages and so far I’ve found a few that I like but I’m just not sure they’re perfect; in the meantime I’ve been testing two mascaras which Liloo very kindly sent to me. I’ve given them a good few weeks so hopefully my views are as balanced and honest as possible!

I’ll start with the L’oréal Volume Million mascara in the shade Amethyst (a purple/plum shade), what I’ll start by saying is that this is meant for hazel eyes and as you can see mine are more blue/green but I don’t think it affects my review in terms of the aspects I’m going to address; colour is irrelevant to me, in my mind the product should be exactly the same no matter what colour.

002-mascara-review-loreal-million-lashes-beauty-uk-lash-fx

003-mascara-review-loreal-million-lashes-beauty-uk-lash-fx

As you can see the tube is quite fat but squared at the top which I have to admit doesn’t make for the most comfortable application; I like something I can get a good grip of and I found it a bit difficult with this! Nevertheless to look at the wand itself it’s made up of lots of tiny little plastic knobbles; presumably to catch every lash humanly possible upon application. I have to admit I do prefer brushes rather than the little knobbles but I’m willing to work with whatever if it works!

The above photos are a before and after of what my lashes look like with this product; L'Oreal claim that Volume Million Lashes should make your lashes up to 3 times thicker, what do you think?
I’m not convinced; although it is obvious that I have used some form of mascara the product hasn’t separated my lashes as much as I hoped it would and it was really quite difficult to apply enough to get a good coverage over each lash. Admittedly it’s not a clumpy mascara and it didn’t smudge all over the place through the day but still the wand is just a bit too bulky for me and didn’t create the desired effect, yes it did separate the lashes at the ends but I just feel like it clumped them up nearer the waterline and it was a little too difficult to remove for my liking considering it isn’t a waterproof mascara!

Bottom Line: Would I buy?
No I wouldn’t, but for those of you who have quite sparse lashes this could be the one for you; I look for length rather than volume you see. This is £10.99 and can be purchased from Boots and Superdrug.

The second mascara I’m going to review is from the lower end of high street makeup; Beauty UK. This is an absolute bargain at £2.49 and I was excited to see if such a cheap mascara could offer me anything. The packaging isn’t anything sparkling just very simple; black with white writing. The one I’ve tried is called ‘Lash FX’ which supposedly helps achieve volume, length and lift; quite a bold statement for £2.49 I’d say!

007-mascara-review-loreal-million-lashes-beauty-uk-lash-fx

I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by this product; the wand is the traditional wand which I’ve come to know and love using because I think it coats my lashes with ease and doesn’t get everywhere unlike some plastic wands. The thickness of the handle is also ideal for me; it fits really nice in my hand making this a pleasure to apply.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting great things from this because I’ve used a Beauty UK eyeshadow palette before and I really wasn’t impressed; I’m very much of the opinion that you ‘get what you pay for’ and there are very few products which go against that.

Although I wasn’t completely wowed by this mascara, I have found a very handy use for this product. You may know of Clinique’s Bottom Lash mascara, priced at around £20, well this has become my perfect bottom lash mascara. Because this doesn’t volumise the lashes that much it means that the product doesn’t clump your bottom lashes like some; I know when I use my usual mascaras I stay away from my bottom lashes because they end up looking spidery. Because the wand is so soft it really is a dream for my bottom lashes; I’d probably go as far as to wear this mascara on the top and bottom for a ‘no makeup’ makeup look. However, I stand by the fact that this for me is perfect for bottom lashes.

Bottom Line: Would I buy?

Yes I would, and so should you! At £2.49 it doesn’t break the bank and you never know you may also find that this is perfect for you and your bottom lashes. You can buy this from Superdrug or from the Beauty UK Website.

Mascara Monday: The Battle of Mascaras. 17 Cosmetics Special

Today, I am super excited to introduce you to Jennifer, from The Makeup Journal who has kindly volunteered to review 2 mascaras for me. Jennifer’s blog is a joy to read: great reviews, great photography, fantastic nail art, gorgeous makeup looks and to top it all off, the most beautiful green eyes which I have totally fallen for, and which may have influenced my choice as a mascara guest blogger :)

Over to you, Jennifer!

--------------

Hi everyone :) I'd like to thank Liloo for picking me as one of her guest bloggers, I've really enjoyed testing these mascaras.

First up, 17 Wild Curls Mascara in Black:

08-17-Cosmetics-Mascara-Review Wild Curls Mascara

07-17-Cosmetics-Mascara-Review Wild Curls brush

Wild Curls mascara is described as creating 'sexy, smouldering and sultry eyes that are loaded with volume and curl for a feline finish.' Strong claims eh... Well I think it does a pretty good job at doing just those things!

So what do I look for in a mascara? I know we all want different things from our mascaras but for me it must:

  • Be dark black.
  • Give plenty of lift and curl to my lashes and keep it there for at least until I get home from work.
  • Volume, volume and more volume. I want BIG lashes without falsies because I'm rubbish at applying them.
  • NO flaking or smudging! I don't want panda eyes - I have dark enough circles under my eyes thank you very much!
  • Water resistant. I don't tend to use waterproof - too hard to remove for lazy people such as myself.

So does Wild Curls tick all the boxes? Yep! I'm rather impressed with this mascara.
It is really easy to apply, the brush is thin and has lots of different sized bristles to catch all lashes. It gives me lots of volume but also some length which is a bonus. It looks quite nice with just one coat - sort of natural with added oomph but with two coats, it is lovely and glamorous. 17 claim that is will last up to 10 hours and it does. I applied it at 7am and it wore all through work until I got home at 6pm. It started to go a bit meh by bedtime but looked okay. If I was going out in the evening I would start again with the mascara so it was fresh. I also like the packaging, it is really fun. Now the price, £6.29 for 9ml - I can't fault that at all and I will definitely purchase this when the tube is finished.
Wild Curls is also available in brown, waterproof and a new 'Wildest Black'.

The other mascara Liloo sent me to review was 17 Va Va Voom Mascara in Black:

04-17-Cosmetics-Mascara-Review Va Va Voom Mascara

03-17-Cosmetics-Mascara-Review Va Va Voom brush

Va Va Voom mascara is described as 'creating big, dramatic eyes or subtle barely-there.' 17 claim that you can 'apply as many coats as you like without your lashes becoming clumpy.'
This mascara didn't impress me as much as Wild Curls did. For starters, the brush is huge, way too big for my tastes. I found it quite hard to apply without getting mascara under my bottom lashes. The bristles are also quite dense which I found didn't apply enough in one sweep and didn't get through my lashes to separate them, leaving them a bit clumpy in the roots.

With a second coat my lashes appeared slightly better from having more product in them. They had more volume and were much darker. They still had clumps in the roots although I don't think it is as bad as some mascaras can be and could be fixed by combing the lashes through. As 17 stated that lots of coats can be applied to build up the volume, I applied a third coat. This was too clumpy for my liking and there was still not enough curl. Va Va Voom just does not compare to Wild Curls in it's curling ability, my lashes were only lifted a little with Va Va Voom. On the plus side, this mascara didn't flake or smudge either. Va Va Voom is an okay mascara, it just doesn't hit all the points with me personally.
Va Va Voom is also available in Black Brown and retails for £6.29 for 8ml.

Out of the two mascaras, Wild Curls wins hands down for me.
Thanks for reading!

Mascara Monday: The Battle of Mascaras.

Today, I have the honour to introduce you to Sophie from Melovemakeup Blog who has kindly volunteered to help me out reviewing 2 mascaras. I love Sophie: her blog is amazing, her makeup tutorials in her youtube channel are inspiring and a delight to watch. Over to you Sophie:

Firstly, thanks to the lovely Liloo for giving me the chance to try out both of these mascaras. I've road tested them both now, so I will share my thoughts..

Before I start, here are the wands for the two mascaras, both totally different.. The Exceptional Definition (left) has the shorter bristles on the right, longer on the left, and then the little spikes at the top.  The Essence mascara is a standard bristle brush, but is absolutely massive!

Boots No7 Say:
"No7 Exceptional Definition Mascara. This amazing new mascara has a truly magic wand and unique, conditioning formula. The innovative three-in-one brush gives lashes exceptional definition and volume. "
Essence Say:
"The ultimate lash-wonder for eyes which will take your breath away: the extra large brush ensures even more volume. ophthalmologically tested."

Here are the Mascaras in action.. As you can see, I have very fair natural lashes, so a great mascara is a big  must for me.

No7 Exceptional Definition:

I love this mascara! I have never used a mascara with 3 wands in one before. This wand is so good for grabbing every single lash, even the finest innermost lashes that you didn't know were there, that's what the little spikes on the end are great for. The double sided brush is great, I like to use the longer side to get through and coat my lashes, and then the shorter side to really comb through and remove any clumps from my lashes.

The results are luscious long looking lashes with both added volume and length, and also great curl too. In the photos (above) I have used one coat of  the mascaras - as you can see my lashes look long, but not overly clumped at all. This mascara lasted really well through the day too, no smudging, no flaking. It gets a big thumbs up from me!

Essence Lash Mania:

My first impression on this mascara when I applied it was great. I was wowed by how amazing my lashes appeared, they looked full and very voluminous. The problem I have with this mascara though, is that the wand is huge, and I'm talking the size of my eye huge! It is very easy to make a mess with this, and I did get quite a bit of the formula on my eye lid and lashline.

After about 4 hours I also noticed that this had smudged underneath my eyes quite a bit, and I looked a bit like a panda. I liked how this made my lashes look, but for me the brush is too large which caused messy application, I don't think it added very much curl either, which the No7 mascara did. The Boots mascara definitely wins for me!

Thanks for reading!

Mascara Special: Guest Bloggers found

I would like to say a massive thank you to all of you who put themselves forward to help me out reviewing mascaras. I really didn't expect such a fab response. To say that it has been difficult to choose 3 guest bloggers is a major understatement. I absolutely loved however reading your comments and discovering your blogs. I am so happy, I have discovered so many nice blogs in the process.

Being a massive fan of false lashes and trying to avoid mascara when I wear falsies, I have accumulated a fair amount of new mascaras which I have not been using. This is a waste, when one of you my readers could try if for free. Interested? I am looking for 3 bloggers and each blogger will be sent 2 mascaras. Let me know which ones you would prefer to try, or which ones you have already tried and not interested in. I will be closing this post on Thursday so if you could let me know by Wednesday, 14 March, midnight, that's would be awesome possum :)

Free No.7 Autumn Eye palette EOTD

A few months ago, in Autumn 2010, Boots got us to buy their latest mascara (the exceptional definition mascara) by giving away a 4 quad eyeshadow "Shimmer & Define" palette with it. It turns out the mascara was really really decent and even fussy Charlotte Lipglossiping was impressed ;) Like many people, I bought the mascara just to get the free palette. Boots is doing this offer again but this time round with the "Exquisite Curl Mascara"

Should you go and rush to buy the mascara to get your hands with this "free" palette?

Image7

The palette looks absolutely gorgeous. Look at the cool suede effect on top of the shadows, I think they should have called the 'autumn suede' palette. The pigmentation is much better than all the individual eyeshadows I've ever swatched in the shop before (No.17 shadows offer so much better colour pay off).

SAM_8341

SAM_8342

It's primarily the colour combination which caught my eyes, so I really wanted to do a look incorporating as many colours as I could from the palette. Here are some swatches:

Image3

The shimmer jumps out of the page: there's too much of it. It's not chunky, there is no problem of fall out here but all the colours are too shimmery to create a look which is going to work on my eyes. I have very droopy lids, I need to highlight the good bits and make the bad bits (the overlapping droopy lid) recede and this palette is not going to do it any favour. But let's try it anyway for the purpose of ‘swatching’ this palette straight onto my eyes.

SAM_9869

To create this look, I used 3 colours out of the 4 contained in the palette. I had to cheat for the highlight though, and used 'vanilla’ from Mac. There is no way I could have used the lighter colour to go all the way up there. There is already too shimmer all around.

Image1

Image2

My overall opinion: this palette is ok but it's not working for me. The colours could work individually and matched with colours outside this palette, but it defeats the purpose of this palette, whose colour combination drawn me to it in the first place. Just because the palette offers 4 colours doesn't mean you need to use all the 4 colours in the same look, but I would have liked the possibility to do so.

Have you got this palette? Look at me in the eyes and tell me how many times you have used it? x
