A trip to Tahiti

I cannot help but feeling nostalgic this week end. It definitely has gone cooler and I need to come to terms that Summer, however late coming and never hot enough is over. I can't bear it. As a consequence, there might be a succession of 'summery' posts on my blog, in an attempt to enjoy the last drops of summer and try to combat (using a typical face cream expression here, ha!) its disappearance.

Today, I would like to share with you, a big favourite of mine: it's the iconic after sun body butter from Hawaiian Tropic. You're supposed to use it to soothe and nourish your skin after sun exposure but I like to use in times like this when I feel nostalgic about summer, and in the middle of winter, just to transport myself to the land of summer in minutes. I don't use it too often (as in too many days in row) because the smell is quite strong.

Of course, it does smell of coconut but, to me, most of all it smells of Monoi, the oil they make from the Frangipani flower (also known as the plumeria or tiaré flower). The flower itself, on its own, in its natural state, is very fragrant. I know that because the neighbour opposite our house used to have a whole wall of it. It's a bit like walking next to a bush of jasmine, it's very strong, very recognisable and therefore needs to be enjoyed in small doses, every now and then.

Right now, I want to douse every inch of my body in it. While some of you had the chance to have a little week in the sun at some point this year, I spent most of my 'summer' indoors *and* on a diet, so I feel I have missed out. For many of you, monoi will just be the archetypical fragrance of sun lotions. For me, it's that and memories from my 26 degrees celsius home.

How does Hawaiian Tropic after sun body butter compare to the Body Shop Coconut butter?
They are very different from each other, so different in fact that I don't think they can be compared to one another but I'll try anyway. For starters, the Bodyshop coconut butter doesn't have the monoi dimension to its fragrance, is much more compact and is housed quite neatly in a chocolate brown tub. The Hawaiian Tropic, to me, deserves more its name of butter (look at its yummy buttery colour) and looks a bit more raw and 'authentic' in its massive Polynesian blue sea tub. Despite their differences, both of them have a lovely thick consistency, and give me amazing moisturisation, with no greasy, heavy or sticky feeling. The Hawaiian Tropic, however, to me, wins the 'exotic / holiday abroad / beaches' card hands down and therefore feels more special.

If you too, want to be transported to the sunny islands of the Pacific, please don't buy your tub of Hawaiian Tropic body butter at Boots as they will charge you £10 for the ticket. You should be able to find it around £5. I get mine at Asda.

BFF Contest (YouTube makeup contest) WINNERS

.
This is. The moment has come, the wait is over and it’s now time to announce the winners of the BFF contest.

a1

For those of you who are new to following my blog, nearly a month ago, ended a makeup contest I organised on YouTube. The theme was BFF. BFF not as in best friend for ever, but Bird, Fruit, Flower where the idea was to create a makeup look either based from a bird, a fruit, and/or a flower. (you can see my blog post about it here). This was my second makeup contest on YouTube, and there is no way I expected such an amazing  turn out. Contest video reached more than 6000 views (which my absolute record ever) and I received no less than 167 entries for it.

I’ve said it before and I’d like to say it again. There’s nothing like the feeling of having someone creating a makeup look for you, making a video of it and publishing it on YouTube. You feel ever so special. Having entered many makeup contests myself before, I know from first hand experience how much work they involve: the inspiration and creation process as any makeup look would take but the courage to post it on YouTube with fierce competition and critique.

Now for the not so good part of makeup contests. This year, I had the help of my two BFF’s to help me with the judging but it was still a heart wrenching process to have to choose the winners. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.

So without further ado and sincere apologies for the delay, below find the long awaited video of winners of the BFF contest. Contest Winners Video is posted here on YouTube and in much better resolution, but I’ll spare you the adverts:

Meet my BFF’s :)

I am not going to lie, this video took me a bit of time to do, shall we say, but it was the least I could do to show tribute to everyone. Any makeup looks which caught your attention? Let me know in the comments below xx

After the rain come the frangipani – Makeup Look FOTD

Another week end, another missed opportunity for taking photos for my blog. Hats down to all of you who manage to post regularly quality posts and pictures come rain, snow, shine and busy schedules. I do not have any kids, boyfriends or family to look after but I totally depend on natural daylight to take my photos as I own a very basic camera (and powerful flash) and I live in a flat where natural daylight is limited. Today for example, the artificial light (that lovely light which makes all your photos yellow when you use a basic camera) has been on.

Hey ho, such is life. For you today, just a simple makeup I made as a mock entry for my YouTube BFF (Bird, Fruit, Flower) contest at the moment. I took inspiration from the frangipani flower, otherwise known as 'plumeria'

032

To achieve this look, I used nyx mellow yellow, nyx white, orange from the eBay 120 palette, a generic brown from the gosh smoky brown trio palette. Lashes are my usual eylure naturalites 101. Blush is made from the same orange from the 120 palette. Lips are made from mac Velvet Teddy and orange eyeshadow. Did I say I liked orange eyeshadow? :P

And the flower in the hair comes from accessorize, pretty huh? I love bright colours so much, especially yellow and orange. They keep me sane in this dreary weather.

If you’re interested, the YouTube makeup contest ends on 16 Feb. More than 50 entries have been received, so the Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland Book of Shadows is now definitely on the cards ^_^
