AcheTML and Blogging…

Last night, passionate bloggers gathered again for the #bbloggers twitter chat. The topic yesterday was 'Blog Layout', where bloggers could share their worries around their blog templates and discuss html tricks and tips, useful widgets to have and so on.

html-text

I really enjoyed the chat.  If you missed it, feel free to download the full transcript (all tweets from 20:00 to 21:30, raw and unedited) of the chat HERE.

I am quite passionate about the topic, however analysing and summarising a busy twitter chat (the last one I did took me nearly week to go through it all) is simply not feasible anymore, but I still hope you'll find the transcript useful.

Twittascope: the bane of my twitter life. How to stop it

Gone are the days when you browse a magazine to read your horoscope. Well you can still do that but there are modern ways to get your horoscope delivered to you: you can have your horoscope tweeted to you. Sounds like a good idea, no? This is what Twittascope is for. How great would that be, to wake up every morning and to have your horoscope tweeted to you.

What Twittascope really does and how it is perceived by some…

Problem is that in reality it doesn't work like that. What the programme does and what you let the programme do, when you 'subscribe' to the service is to let it tweet on your behalf, and to aaaaaaall your lovely followers the horoscope attached to your personal star sign.

Now my tweets are annoying enough as it is. I tweet way too much for starters, my tweets seem to gravitate mainly about makeup, I participate in a lot of twitter competitions, I am known to have a few rants, my tweets are not always uplifting (any more depressing sometimes and you would want to throw yourself out of the window after reading my tweets) and the list goes on... Now why would I, to top it all off, make things worse and grace my lovely followers with the horoscope predictions about Pisces? How is that tweet relevant to people from other star signs? It isn't relevant and very annoying at best.

The most stupid thing about the design of Twittascope, is that, because the way programme works (Twittascope doesn't send you a direct message with your horoscope or not even a @mention) you don't even see the actual horoscope you actually subscribed to. People subscribed to the service are not actually not aware of the tweets they're posting.

This is the timeline of my friend subscribed to the service. I am not sure where she is at the moment. Have a look at a timeline. If you read it quickly, you could be  forgiven for thinking that she is a bot.
She’s not.

Image30

Now there are more important things that unwanted Twittascope spam I should be worrying about. I am usually OK with Twittascope, I follow so many people and it's hard to keep track of everything which is being tweeted. Every now and then though (and today seems to be one of these days) it's one of these pet peeves which resurface and when ask myself why people would want to subject their twitter followers to Spamoscope.

I am not the only one who is annoyed at Twittascope. And it's such a petty little thing in the grand scheme of twitter things that if you have Twittascope, your followers won't probably bother commenting on it. Today I would like to speak on behalf of all your followers who are also irritated with Twittascope spam and information about your star sign, but who are too polite to comment about it.

tweeters

Imagine the following scenario. Imagine Twittascope works the way it should work and sends you a direct message every day with your horoscope in there. You have TweetDeck installed and you get a sound notification everytime you get a DM or a @mention. Your TweetDeck beeps, you get all excited and you think ‘oOOo a new tweet, Yaaaaaay’ and then you find out that it was only Twittascope tweeting you. Great :S

Now imagine you tweet something you feel a bit shy about, or something a bit sensitive.  You feel a bit nervous about how people are going to respond to your tweet. But you take the courage to tweet and do it. Your TweetDeck beeps, and you think ‘OMG, someone has replid’ and then, then THEN, you find out you got all excited for nothing because it was just Twittascope DMing you. Pretty bummed no? You’d be quite tempted to unsubscribe from the service from that unpleasant experience, wouldn’t you?

How to stop Twittascope tweeting on your behalf…

If you have Twittascope and feel concerned that you might cause erm.. discomfort to others and want to stop the subscription of the Twittascope, you can follow these easy steps:

1. Log on to http://www.twitter.com/
2. go to SETTINGS
3. go to APPLICATIONS. What this page will do, is to display all the applications you have authorised to work with your twitter account
4. Scroll down to TWITTASCOPE, and then press REVOKE ACCESS.

Thank you to lovely Kat aka @KittyFairy for the instructions.

So what do you do if you're really annoyed with Twittascope spam? If you mainly use TweetDeck, well you are in luck. You can add 'Twittascope' in your filters and be done with it. If you use web twitter, other than that speaking to the person twittascoping to the risk of ruining a twitter friendship for such a petty matter, there is nothing you can do, other than sucking it up, grin and bear it, and read the spam, day after day after day. Another option you now have is to say: 'OMG have you see this post about Twittascope? *hint* *hint* hope that they will get the hint ;)

Happy tweeting everyone. Peace ^_^

Hey, do you want to read my Twittascope for today? :P

Your life, your time, your blog… Summary of #Bbloggers ‘Time Management’ Twitter Chat

Last week, in the absence of Fee from Makeup Savvy, I had the chance to host the weekly #bbloggers twitter chat, where bloggers from all walks of life were invited to join and talk about 'time management'. The chat gathered 226 of you. A whopping 1600 {or thereabout} tweets were exchanged. What was said? Without much further ado and with profuse apologies for my delay and {ironically} bad management of time, here's an attempt at summarising one heck of busy and fast paced hour.

mmm

Right from the word go, it was evident that 2 main trends of ideas were developing, which actually put into question the very need of a twitter chat based on 'Blogging and Time Management'. The chat seemed to divide itself in between 2 teams: the super organised and the spontaneous.

I hope you will enjoy this ‘summary’. Please stay till the end to find out:
- what you chose to retweet the most from the whole hour,
- the top 10 contributors to the #bbloggers chat and last but not least
- some feel-good, perk me up motivations tweets.

Blogging and Time Management: Join the #bbloggers twitter chat tonight

bbloggerschat6

007

If you're anything like me, if you're lucky enough to have the whole day to get ready for a special occasion or  night out, you'll probably spend the whole day, doing just that: getting ready. To make things worse, you'll be  spending your time on pointless things in the process (re-organising mp3 collection, finding a lost earring which  you won't wear in the end etc) You won't mind doing spending all this time, because at the end of the day you  enjoy spending time on yourself. Was that good use of your precious leisure time though? Could you have achieved more? Are you satisfied with yourself?

When it comes to blogging {again, if you're anything like me} you'll spend an inordinate amount of time on one  post, because you enjoy it so much but then other areas of your life will suffer because of all that time spent  on blogging and all the tasks surrounding it (taking gazillions of photos, selecting them, researching articles  for that topic you write etc..) In the meantime, you'll have students with coursework to do, busy mums, all with  the same blogging hobby as you, juggling all their multiple commitments and writing just as much or if not more  posts than you, and getting this urge to post about a particular topic satisfied, while you'll be stressing out on how so much more you want to write but not getting it done.

How do they do it?
How do you keep a balance between your life and your blogging hobby?
Is blogging slowly taking over your life? Do you feel you make good use of your time when it comes to blogging?

If this is you, and feeling concerned that you might not be making good use of your time when you blog, Come, come and talk about it and join the #bbloggers twitter chat, tonight at 20.00 (8pm BST {GMT+1)
For its 6th week (how can it be 6 weeks already?) the topic of #bbloggers will be:

 Blogging and Time Management

Fee, from MakeupSavvy, creator of the #bbloggers Chat would usually be hosting the Sunday chat. This week  Fee won't be able to be on twitter properly to host the chat and asked me to step into her (high heel)  shoes, start the proceedings and cover for her. Eeek! I hope you will join the chat nevertheless.
The  ideal aim of the chat tonight would be to learn from others who are better at manage their life and their  blogging hobby, perhaps to gain a few tips and tricks maybe? Failing that, well it will always good to talk isn’t it? ^_^

Twitter Basics: What the heck is a tag? What is this #bbloggers thing?

whatisatag

What's this #bbloggers thing?
Why is my timeline full of people ending their tweets with the #bbloggers word?

*** UPDATE 29 August 2011 ***

#Bbloggers is now organised by Lily from BeautysBadHabit. For further information on past, present and future topics, please click here or simply tweet @beautysbadhabit

#Bbloggers is a twitter HASHTAG (or frequently abbreviated to just TAG) created by Fee from MakeupSavvy.   “Hashtags are a powerful tool that allows Twitter users to track what many people (especially people whom you  aren’t already following) are reporting or thinking about a particular topic or event” * For example, if you live  in the UK, you will have seen many twitter users appending their tweets with #theapprentice or #bgt when the  popular tv programmes The Apprentice and Britain's Got Talent (shortened to BGT) are on TV. Whether you should subject all  your followers with your running commentary of the programme on twitter is another debate (and one which I am not  getting into today) but it remains that using a tag when tweeting about a particular event or topic is very handy for 2 main reasons:
  1. Your followers are automatically able to understand that 'Did Amanda had a date with David Dickinson last  night' would refer to Amanda Holden (from Britain’s Got Talent) and a heavy hand with the St Tropez
  2. You can meet some new people talking about the same topic/event, have a laugh and perhaps follow them as  result.

So what's #bbloggers then? What does it stand for?
#BBloggers is a twitter tag created by Fee from MakeupSavvy to track a chat about blogging, where bloggers from  all over the world, are invited to talk about their blogs. {please read Fee's introductory post here}

#Bbloggers  stand for Beauty Bloggers, with originally having Beauty Bloggers in mind, but it is open to all bloggers,  regarding the topic they are blogging about, their experience of blogging, whether they have started blogging 2  minutes ago, or been at it for years.

#Bbloggers is a weekly 1-hour twitter chat (every Sunday, 8.00 to 9.00pm  GMT) but the chat always run for an hour, with sometimes the most gobby ones talking till midnight! The chat has  proven to be very popular and around 2000 tweets are exchanged during the hour, which leaves me on to the next point.

How to take part in #bbloggers?
The same way as you would append your tweets with #americanidol, for example when talking about the programme American  Idol (I am not obsessed with reality or talent shows or anything) you just need to include the #bbloggers tag when taking in the part in the conversation, and everybody  following the #bbloggers feed, whether they follow you or not, will be able to see your contributions to the  chat, be able to reply to you etc.

How do you follow the #bbloggers chat feed?
  • Tweetdeck users: If you have Tweetdeck, following a hashtag couldn't be any easier. You create and save a new 'search' column.  Type in the tag #bbloggers as the search criteria, and the column will appear alongside all your existing ones,  showing all the latest tweets tweeted using that hashtag. The column will automatically update itself. If you  enable the 'live stream' feature, you're in for a fast paced ride. Try it sometime ;)

  • Web Twitter users: 1. Go to Twitter Search.
    2. Type in the expression #bbloggers in the search query. (It might better to open the search page in a different  browser tab/window so that you can still see your mentions/replies and main feed as normal
    3. Refresh the page periodically to see the latest results
    4. Fasten your seat belts as the chat has proven to be popular and is quite fast.

    Twitter bird

Humourous Tags or tags used in a joke context

I couldn’t end this post without mentioning the non serious jokey tags. It’s not to everyone’s taste but I like them. Tags like #thingsyoudowhenyourebored or other ‘fake’ tags which people invent are not meant to track a conversation. Well you can’t try searching for occurences of #thingsyoudowhenyourebored and other out of the blue made-up tags but I don’t think you’ll get very far.

* Credit: I hope Amy Gahran will forgive me to relying heavily on her article for the clear and straightforward instructions on how to follow a twitter tag.
Why this post? I’m covering for Fee (MakeupSavvy) and opening the proceedings of #Bbloggers Chat tonight. As there any many new people joining the chat every week, I wanted to have a little something ready to explain the basics.  I am not a twitter expert by any means but I have tweeted *cough*a fair few times and have learnt a few things along the way.

The best of the Royal Wedding? YOUR tweets

I was NOT planning to watch the Royal Wedding. I was planning even less to write something about it. I woke up this afternoon with the firm intention of not switching on the tv and be a grumpy sod all day. But then I came on twitter and couldn't escape the buzz around royal wedding and your hilarious running commentary of it. So I thought I might just as well join in, watch the wretched wedding and enjoy your entertaining tweets. Here are some of my favourites:

003

004

I totally didn't expect the royal bride to do her own makeup, especially when knowing that probably every country in the world would watch it (what a pressure). Some of you remember the cliché but adorable wave off to the crowd in that Aston Martin, as their favourite moment of the day

thesun mirror

Image94

Or perhaps was it the reveal of the dress which excited most people and if the evening one was a bit more fun than the day one Zzzzzz

That poor little girl on the balcony will never hear the end of it…

tv crunch - grumpy-flower-girl-prince-william-kate-middleton-kiss-balcony

but for me the best moment were your tweets. You lot cheer me up, you really do.
How did you spend today? Did you watch any of it at all? If you did, what was your best moment?

Her makeup on her big day ... seen by YOU

Well, well, well, we were not expecting that were we. There has been speculations on what dress the bride of the year would be wearing, what perfume and nail polish would be appropriate for the day she would be wearing, makeup companies from right, left, centre being inspired by the big occasion but no one was expecting Kate Middleton would actually be doing her own makeup.

DV943041

We were all bit surprised at hearing the news, especially the makeup enthusiasts I follow on twitter and this is what some of you felt on the matter:

001

I personally couldn't tell the difference and her makeup (although a bit boring to me, then again most of wedding and day makeup are a bit boring to me) looked very apt for the occasion. Which left me wondering:
Would you do your own makeup
for your big day?

And this is what some of you had to say on the question:

002

I was quite surprised to hear that some of you would rather do your own, rather than leaving it to the hands of an experienced makeup artist. Personally, getting the makeup done is the best bit about a big occasion, whether it'd be a wedding or Halloween even.

What about you?
What did you think of Kate’s makeup?
Would you have the guts to do it yourself?

Would you  go matchy matchy and wear blue eyeshadow to match your outfit, like Margarethe, The Queen of Denmark? This reminds me, I must try this wahanda kit I bought sometime ago… :P

You haven’t lived if … you haven’t been to a Costco!

.
I didn't plan to write this. It's all Stuart's fault. Please excuse the silliness of this post, this is not about makeup, it’s a just a little bit of fun.

I hate the idea of missing out of potential good stuff. I had heard briefly about Costco in the past. I knew it was a paradise shop but that’s about it really.

Image68

And then, sir Stuart Heritage, some ginger? hilarious bloke who writes for the Guardian tweeted this and I became all jealous and wanted to know more.

000

But when I asked on twitter:
What is Cotsco?
is it a posh shop down south?
what does it sell? xx

I really wasn't ready for the overwhelming wave of love you had for this shop and I really didn't expect so many would answer in mass. I could have googled it but being lazy nothing beats the feedback from real people, innit?

Here's what Costco is all about and what you are missing out on:

Thank you everyone :)
I am so jealous, and I want to go now. Please can I go with you next time? I want to stuff my face with birthday cakes and giant steaks.

The best eye makeup remover chosen by… You! :) Mini Poll

.I am running out of eye makeup remover (It seems like I'm going through gallons of eye makeup remover so quickly) and I need to buy a new one.  At the moment, I am using a eye makeup remover from Simple, a decent alternative I had to find to replace my ultimate favourite eye makeup remover product, which I can’t find in England, Cils Demasq, a bi-phase product from Gemey/Maybelline.

Image24

I was really curious to see what is everyone's favourite eye makeup remover to have ideas of what to buy and also to find out if I've been missing out on real gems. So this is what, you, my lovely twitter followers have answered, 34 of you to be precise:

Image2

Image4

I messed up my imagemap on the previous picture, so if you want to access cosmetic candy’s links, here are they are, this is her review of her beloved Softymo and this is where she buys it.

Image5

and last but certainly not least:

Image12

I would like to say a massive thank you to all of you for your replies. It is really really interesting what everyone is using, from the high street product to the high end ones, with some ‘homemade’ simple ones thrown in too.

Image222

I have learnt so much and I think I have been really missing out on the wonder of what the ‘Botanics’ seems to be. I didn’t even know that Boots Botanics did an eye makeup remover, as I was judgemental about all the metallic lid of their bottles but @loulou699 reassured me and nothing is stopping me now :)

Image6

I also really really want to try a product I’ve never tried before: the Bioderma product raved about by @lipglossiping and @mylipsbutbetter, as I love the concept of water removing makeup and leaving no residues.

Are you surprised by the answers?
Were they predictable to you?
Any product from above which you want to try?
What is your holy grail eye makeup remover?
