Nyx Team Spirit, Milani Atlantis: Review & Recreation Look

A long time ago, long long time ago I received this beautiful Nyx trio palette "team spirit" as part of a 'across the pond' makeup swap with my friend Jessica  aka TheKillerBurrito on YouTube.  Along with this palette, buried in a sea of other American goodies, a little individual shadow from Atlantis which looked like your average drugstore makeup.

SAM_4986

SAM_4983

Like my 2 previous nyx trio eyeshadow trio palettes, I was once again super impressed: great pigmentation, so soft to the touch (but not too soft like the 120 palette) and very easily blendable, and as usual in its neat little palette with a mirror and everything. It just had to go on my eyes, asap and I just couldn't wait. The minute I saw it, it reminded me of a beautiful makeup look Sophie from @Melovemakeup blog created before (She did her look with Boots17 Cosmetics 'Dolly Mixture').

I did this recreation months and months ago and I have always been in two minds (is that the expression?) about posting it as I am not very happy with the result. In the end, what made me decide to go for it is that many people on blogs and YouTube create make up looks, people comment that they like it and feel inspired by it but most of the time, the artist never sees how the others have interpreted and recreated their makeup. Sophie: I hope this doesn’t make you want to stop doing makeup looks lol xx

 SAM_5635

This look makes me yawn just looking at it. It looks absolutely nothing like Sophie’s and I also had to make do without her Arabic liner as I *just* don't suit black pencil on the waterline. I really don't like my recreation, I look PALE as anything, so please take this post as more of a colour swatch on the eye rather than a proper look I would want to show off. What a shame. I might try again one day with some matte shadows. I am stubborn like that.

On me, the look lacks definition. So I went ahead and added a bit of  Milani Atlantis blue eyeshadow  in the crease to add a bit of depth.

SAM_4973

I feel it looks better but I'm still not crazy about the look.

Image1

However, I was totally sold by Milani Atlantis. I have so many eyeshadows, but just like that, with one swatch it became my favourite blue eyeshadow: pigmentation is incredible, and texture is so velvety smooth, it applies and blends like a dream on the lids. In fact, I know it's bright blue and not easily wearable but I remember quite vividly wanting to play with this shadow again and I couldn't put it down. This little shadow made me want to purchase a lot more Milani eyeshadows. If only I just could just pop down to my local Boots to swatch some. *sigh*  Have you got some milani eyeshadows? Anything you would recommend?

Been a busy bee…

Woah, it feels like such  a long time I have not blogged. Yes, I have been a busy bee but I think it’s fairer to say that I’ve not been making the most productive use of my spare time. Meanwhile on the YouTube scene, one of my favourite makeup guru, sharksbiteoflife has invited me to be one of her judges for her latest makeup contest. I was so happy  to have been invited that I could not resist making a little mock entry makeup look for it. The theme for the contest? To create a makeup look based on ‘Saturday Morning Makeup Cartoons’.

I chose to create my look around a French cartoon I used to love love love so much as a kid. The cartoon is called ‘Maya l’abeille’ (Maya the bee) and tells the adventures of a little but mischievous bee. She goes through a lot, she cries a lot, but she is a fighting little beast lol.

001SAM_7352

003

To create this look, I used pretty much all highstreet/drugstore makeup. My trusted nyx palette for the white and black, then my lipglossiping shu uemura eyeliner in yellow as a base for my ‘mellow yellow’ eyeshadow from nyx. Looking back, the look could have benefited from black or yellow rhinestones to emulate the ends of a bee’s antenna. Never mind.

004SAM_7319

If you have a minute, have a look at my youtube video, and see a little extract of the actual cartoon & leave me a comment :) Brownie Points if you can recognise the tune to the other childhood cartoon I used to love watch too. Plenty of clues were posted on twitter tonight haha.

bloggue

Man, I’ve had so much fun doing this look and reminiscing the happy times of my childhood. Excuse the lame pun, but what would  your favourite childhood cartoon bee? :) Let me know, I’d love to hear.

Who needs Mac Carbon & Gesso?

Ever since, I got into makeup, I have been wanting to buy Mac Carbon, acclaimed to be the blackest black eyeshadow around and Mac Gesso. I resisted long and hard and instead, I went on buying endless black shadows and being disappointed all the time. If only I had opted for Mac in the first place, it would have been cheaper for me in the long run. But somehow, I couldn’t justify spending £11 in a boring black and white shadow, however crucial those shadows are. So I gave it one last shot, before making the Mac plunge and purchased this Nyx Eyeshadow Trio in white/gray/black (TS01) from eBay.

Image31

The palette comes in a black elegant and sturdy case and is about 9 cm in length (that’s about 3 inches and a half for your with the imperial system) and a mirror, and the obligatory sponge applicator. One swatch of the black and I knew I had made the right choice: super pigmented and most definitely the blackest matte I have ever swatched: smooth, velvety, black. What more could anyone want?

Is it deeper and blacker than Mac Carbon? I got no idea. Carbon was just a myth and I actually never swatched it. I don’t even want to buy it anymore and I fully satisfied with this one and I am at rest.

SAM_5196

These are swatched straight onto the skin with no primer and I am in love with the black.
The white is good, much better than some of the matte white I have in my collection but I find it a bit chalky. As a matter of fact, I find all my matte whites chalky, so no surprises there. I don’t even know if Mac Gesso is whiter but I don’t fancy it anymore. I reckon if I use a white base, it will perfom well. I found the grey very good and not too shimmery. I am not sure when I am not going to use it, but for £2.94 (without postage and packing, which amounted to £2 proportionally? – I placed a big £40 order)  for this palette from ebay, new, this is by far the best buy of the year for me.

SAM_5122

I use white and black nearly everytime in my looks, and this palette is super handy. The size makes it also handy for carrying around, and it has become one of my must haves.  I am thrilled. *Woop* In the same order, I bought some other gems from NYX, so keep your eyes peeled, I have only just started :)

:: CLOSED :: Blog Mini Giveaway: 3 nail polishes for you, my readers

I could not put my finger on what/who triggered this but, since last week end, I suddenly got interested to do something with my nails. I am fortunate to have strong-ish nails, which grow reasonably fast, with decent white tips (*sigh*, I would have much preferred to have naturally white teeth instead!) but I have been quite shy about applying nail polish.

So basically I want to learn as much as I can. This is where you come in ;) I would like to trade 3 brand new (never been opened) nail polishes against a bit of your expertise on the realm of nails. Here is what you could win:

001
From left to right: Nyx Cosmetics, Midnight Dream, which is a shimmery dark purple.
Elite, Luxe Laque in Red, orange based red.
Nyx Cosmetics, Roasted, which is a shimmery golden rusty orangey red. You don’t really see the shimmer on the photo. It reminds me of a shimmery tabasco sauce
I don’t know which finishes they are but the look very pwetty ^_^
I have taken some close-ups below.
What to do: leave a comment on this blog, on any tips you would like to give me about nails (fave polishes, varnish application, cuticle stuff, anything… I am a total beginner, so please don’t feel you might be patronising or give ‘obvious tips’ that everyone knows about. (For example: I only learnt the other day the trick of putting your soft eyepencil in the freezer so that it doesn’t always break when you tried to sharpen it)
If you are stuck for inspiration, I have written below a tiny little paragraph of things you might want to talk about.
Rules: You just need to a subscriber/follower of my blog.
Giveaway starts Sunday 14 March 2010 and ends on Sunday 21 March 2010 Open Internationally.
What to win: I will send the lucky winner the 3 nail polishes.

003

You don’t need to have to write loads, the winner will be chosen at random but if you want to brag about your knowledge of nails, now this is your chance. I am a total beginner, so please don’t feel you might be patronising or give ‘obvious tips’ that everyone knows about. If you want to advertise your own blog and other blogs, websites, YouTube videos, that’s also totally fine by me. Spam away haha.

002

Below some suggestions you could comment on. Please don’t let the following list put you off, these are just questions I am asking myself, and areas I would like to improve on. If you by any chance, written an article or blog post about any of the points below, please feel free to include your link :)

 004
Brace yourselves people, here comes the mighty list of  inspiration o_0
Shopping & Inspiration
- When buying nail polishes online, where do you shop?
- Have you ever bought nail polishes on eBay, any sellers would you like to recommend?
- When buying a nail polish in a normal shop (i.e not online) how do you know it’s not going to be streaky or take 4 coats to have something decent showing?
- If you had to list your favourite ‘nail resource of information/inspirations’ website or blogs, what would say?
- Do you know any polishes at all which only need one coat, or do you apply multiple coats anyway?
Favourites
- What are your favourite nail polish brands and why?
- Which nail polish brands you really can’t stand and why?
- What are your 5 ultimate nail polish colours?
- What cuticle product do you swear by?
Application, Maintenance etc. - Thinking back on what you used to used to do when you started painted your nails, what did you think you were doing wrong?
- What were the typical mistakes you were doing before?
- Do you always use a base coat and an overcoat at the end? Wouldn’t the nail feel heavy after all that?
- Do cuticles *need* to be cut, or can I just moisturise them a bit & use a wooden cuticle pusher to push them a bit?
- Is it normal that it hurts when you have your cuticles cut by the beautician, or are they not doing their job properly?
- Is the secret to beautiful looking nails not to apply it too close to the cuticles?
- What is the longevity of a bottle of nail polish after you’ve opened it? Are you not scared when you buy a nail polish, someone has opened it before therefore altering its freshness?
- Do expensive polishes become goopy & thick too?
Thank you very much for reading. There are no minimum number of participants for the giveaway to run. Even if there is only one person who comments, then I will send the very kind soul the 3 polishes.

xx liloo

A very happy tree :)

I can’t believe how many presents I got this year! I am feeling very loved. I could not resist telling the whole world about it. So this is a picture of my tree :) I got 7 presents this year

Image4

  • a little flower brooch from @teampixie (square 1)
  • a cute teddy bear from @sugonja (square 2)
  • some scented bath salts from a colleague (square 3)
  • a fantastic present from superdrug (square 4)
  • a bundle of 3 presents from my ‘prison break’ friend (sq. 5)
  • a mysterious box, as shown on sq. 6
  • and all the way from the states, the biggest box ever from @glinda666, as shown on square 7.

Let’s open the presents shall we? :)

From Superdrug

This present got me sooo excited. Earlier on during the week, I won a twitter giveway competition from @superdrugloves. I did not expect to receive before Christmas. So I literally squealed when I received it, and squealed even more when I opened it. (I am reusing the word ‘squeal’, newly acquired from @lipglossiping haha! Inside, the best selling products from Elite Products, yep, and full size products too!!

001

From my friend ‘Prison Break’

Totally spot on, my friends knows me well, and it’s just all I love, aaaaaaa :) A bottle of kir royale, a single yet generous portion of panettone, and some lindt chocolate. A lot of thought has went into in the portion side of it, which suits the deranged food wise person that I am.

002

The mysterious present, as shown above on square 6

Now this one was totally a genuine surprise. For some reason, I thought it was another parcel from superdrug, or an order that I made some time ago. There was no mention at all of the sender apart from the name of a company on the packaging tape. And it turned out to be a present from my friend @joannadelilah. Really really thoughtful. I only met her once in real life, in wales. We had the most amazing breakfast in Wales, and she went ahead and has a mug of our mugshots holding a mug. This is incidentally the only picture I liked which was taken of all the fun week end spent in wales. That really really touched me and has brought so many memories back. @joannadelilah: we need to meet up again!!!

003

By coincidence as well, I just caught up with the facebook picture feed of my friend @joannadelilah (I can have access to have albums if people send me the external address of the album) and my favourite picture of the whole lot (after the picture of the radioactive eyes of madonna the cat) was a pic of my friend holding a mug, just chilling out, nice and relaxed, just like I met her, minus the ‘jordan eyes’ make up. There she is my friend @joannadelilah <3

kkk

and the box from @glinda666

Now this one as well has taken me totally by surprise. I am absolutely blown away by the generosity, fabulousness, gorgeousness, personal touch and exclusivity of this present. I am slightly embarrassed too because this is sooo much! Thank you so much @glinda666!!! Omg, you crazy woman, this is way too much, I can’t believe how much stuff you have given me. Omg, omg, omg, omg! I had to take multiple pictures of this because I am way too excited aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !!!

Me, before opening it, all excited already. Told you the box was huge!

004

Inside the outer package, a gorgeous laminated luxurious christmas box. That box itself must have cost a fortune, it’s gorgeous!

005

And the treasure hunt begins. The lovely greeting card sets me on a mission to find in a sea of softly multifaceted confettis style streamers (not sure how to describe it) 11 little jars.

006

On my way there, I find buried in this sea of fun, 2 other little parcels. And there they are, nothing less a beautiful selection of 11 of the most gorgeous MAC pigments, yes, that’s right it’s all mac stuff!!! (I squeal at looking at the gorgeous colours and recognising names of products the big gurus of this world use). Totally overwhelmed at this point, I can’t believe how utterly precious and gorgeous those colours are. I feel so spoilt!

And then, I find buried in this sea of fun, 2 other little parcels.

  • 2 full size MAC blankety lipsticks! Blankety being my favourite lipstick of all time, and I had lost the one that I had which got me all upset!
  • And then, omg omg omg 3 nyx jumbo pencils, in the following colours: milk, french fries, and black bean. Makeup aficionadoes will know how exclusive the nyx jumbo pencils are, as they are nowhere to be found in the UK!!!

007

Glinda: This is way too much, (I am going to keep all the little treasures though, it’d be rude not to! haha) Youve spoilt me too much, thank you, thank you, and thank you. This is my best christmas ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Image10

Reflects Transparent Teal is missing on this picture. But you’ll see it below :)

008

And there they are :) My 11 little piggies.

  • top row: burnt burgundy, teal, pink pearl;
  • middle row: crystallised purple, mutiny, violet, fuchsia, 3d silver;
  • bottom row: reflects very pink, reflects gold, reflects transparent teal

009

Best Christmas ever aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :) What about you? Did you get anything this christmas which totally got you… squealing?
